Day Seven

We pick up the car... oh my God.

Gary and I are a little apprehensive of the car thing... driving on the left side of the road is a tad bit overwhelming.... must admit, it has been difficult just being a pedestrian with the cars driving on the other side of the road - it is all so dyslexic.

We decide to walk over to the Hertz rent a car - it’s about a mile and a half away.

The walk was really pleasant, the car rental process fine and then the introduction - Yikes, it is a huge Audi - it looks like a wagon. We have never owned or driven a car this big - where is our little inconspicuous car?

They say this is the only automatic they have left... we say ok, show us how this thing works.

The man walks off, Gary and I sit silently in the car - savoring this moment, because both of us realize that the next will be crazy scary. We are at a busy intersection - and in a matter of 30 yards, we must merge into a busy traffic flow; go through a crazy 5 line entry, stop lighted round-a-bout; miss the construction happening in one of the lanes and flow side by side a bus in a very narrow road... WHILE REMEMBERING TO STAY ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD.

Gary and I simultaneously let out a sigh and off we go. We make it safely to our hotel only a little-over-the-edge-stressed, pack the car with our luggage and then begin the driving journey of our adventure.

We will be on the road for the next 5 weeks.

Regardless of what is said about driving in Europe... and by the by it is all true, we really do like driving around in Europe... We love being on the back small roads, being totally lost and confused - It is so very much like being on an amusement park ride - You never know what is around the next corner.

Here are some of our most recorded memorable moments.

Obstacles on the Road

Traveling to Holy Island is very interesting. If you do not judge the tides correctly you and your car could be swept out to sea...  If you do not leave the island in time you get to stay until the next low tide... And if you met someone coming the opposite direction you hope they are driving a very narrow car :)

If you get stuck in the tide change, all is not lost. They will send a helicopter to pick up you and your car... cost is only 4000 pounds.

Gooey sand - on one beach we actually saw a sign that said "Quick Sand". Fortunately it was not here:)

Other Obstacles

Walls, Buses, Cars, Sheep and very small roads with very big stone walls.

Berwick on Tweed presented it's own challenges. It was a completely walled city. To get inside one must pass through the wall. Sounds easy enough... except the hole was built for horses and carts.

And we are to fit exactly where?

Sometimes There are Just Such Beautiful Things To See

Countryside, Clouds, Unusual Houses and Villages.

Then Sometimes You Get Lost

Yup, and when you find yourself there can be some really cool things waiting for you.

The next series of pictures is us getting lost in the middle of no where while looking for something really special.

Gary with his GPS is so totally him... must write a story about this later.

Eureka, we found it at last... a beautiful stone circle.

Great stories and wonderful pictures. Stay alert! That driving on the wrong side of the road will sneak up on you when you least expect it. For me it was when I backed out onto the road and took off. Around the next corner was a fire engine light ablaze coming right at us. What the hell is going on. Oh! get over fool.

Have fun.

This is such an amazing country... and the beauty is that when you get "fried" with driving you can park your car literally anywhere... and walk. Love that there are so many walking trails, very cool. Glad you are enjoying our adventures! And Jerry we laughed out loud as we read your story, oh so familiar.
